 Healing After Birth Trauma

Bringing a child into the world is meant to be a profound and life-altering experience, but when birth doesn't go as expected, it can leave behind invisible wounds. If your birth experience felt overwhelming, frightening, or left you feeling unheard, unseen, or disconnected from yourself, you are not alone. Many parents carry the emotional weight of birth trauma in silence, unsure of how to begin healing or where to turn for support.

What you went through -- or what you didn't get to experience -- matters. Your healing around all of this is not only possible but deeply deserving of care. Through somatic therapy, you can begin to reconnect with your body, release what's been held inside, and rediscover a sense of peace and safety in yourself again.

What Birth Trauma Can Look Like

Birth trauma can take many forms — an emergency C-section, feeling unheard during labor, NICU stays, or even just the deep fear that something could have gone wrong. It isn’t always about what happened, but also about how it felt in your body and what support (or lack of support) was present. Some experiences that may lead to birth trauma include:

  • A difficult or prolonged labor

  • Medical interventions that felt invasive or unexpected (forceps, vacuum extraction, episiotomy)

  • Emergency or unplanned C-section

  • Loss of control or consent during medical procedures

  • Feeling dismissed, ignored, or silenced by care providers

  • Being separated from your baby after birth

  • Baby’s NICU stay or complications at birth

  • Hemorrhaging or post-birth medical trauma

  • Feeling your boundaries were crossed or your intuition was overridden

  • Stillbirth or miscarriage

  • Birth that triggered memories of past trauma or abuse

  • Hypervigilance, fear, or panic during the birthing process

  • Having no one to advocate for you

  • A birth that looked “fine” on paper but felt traumatic in your body

  • Guilt after an abortion

  • Placing a baby in adoption and dealing with the aftermath of that choice

Through somatic therapy, we gently work with your experience in small, manageable pieces, supporting your nervous system to process and release what your body has been holding. This kind of work is not about reliving — it’s about renegotiating. It helps restore a felt sense of safety, reconnect you with yourself, and move slowly toward healing and wholeness at a pace that honors you.

A Safe Space for Postpartum Support

As a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, I support new parents navigating the emotional landscape that can follow childbirth. Whether you’re dealing with postpartum depression, anxiety, lingering fear from a difficult birth, a strange physical sensation like nausea, or simply feeling unlike yourself — you don’t have to carry it alone.

My postpartum sessions are grounded in compassion, consent, and attunement. Together, we work gently with your nervous system to help you process and resolve what’s getting in the way of feeling more supported, more connected to your body, and more like yourself again. This is a space where all your experiences are welcome — where your healing unfolds in a way that feels grounded and supportive, honoring both your story and your capacity.

With someone who truly gets how complex this time can be. My approach to postpartum depression therapy creates space for all the feelings that may arise—grief, joy, anger, numbness, or anything in between. There’s no need to edit yourself here. Everything you’re feeling is welcome.

You're Not Alone in This Journey

If you’re wondering how to recover from birth trauma—or questioning whether your story “counts” as trauma—please know this: your pain is valid. Overcoming birth trauma isn’t about justifying your experience or comparing it to someone else’s. It’s about honoring what you went through, feeling supported, and slowly finding your way back to balance and inner peace.

How My Birth Trauma Services Can Help

My birth trauma healing services include one-on-one and small group somatic therapy sessions, offered in a way that’s gentle, embodied, and deeply respectful of your pace. Healing can begin days, months, or even years after giving birth—there’s no expiration date on your right to feel whole again.

If you’ve found yourself thinking, “I need help healing from this,” or “I’m not myself anymore,” or “How do I get back to who I was?”—you’re not alone. This work is here to help you feel grounded in your body, safe in your experience, and truly seen.
